OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft have expressed their support for California's AB 3211, a bill requiring tech companies to label AI-generated content. Scheduled for a final vote in August, the bill mandates watermarks in the metadata of AI-generated photos, videos, and audio clips. Although many AI companies already use metadata to mark content, most consumers do not read it. AB 3211 also requires large online platforms, such as Instagram and X, to clearly label AI-generated content for the average viewer. Initially deemed "unworkable" and "overly burdensome" by a trade group representing major software makers, recent amendments to the bill have secured their backing.
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which includes OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft, helped create the C2PA metadata standard for marking AI-generated content.
