In August, xAI, founded by Elon Musk, announced the release of the Grok API, a key generative AI model now available for developers. Priced at $5 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the API currently includes only one model, "grok-beta." Although specifics are unclear, it is likely based on Grok 2, X's latest AI model. The API offers function calling to integrate Grok with external tools, and future updates may include vision models for text and image analysis. xAI's Grok is increasingly embedded in the X platform, generating images via Flux and summarizing news, albeit with some errors.
Despite environmental concerns raised due to its Memphis datacenter, xAI plans to upgrade the facility next year pending regulatory approval. Earlier this year, xAI secured $6 billion in funding from notable investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, underscoring its potential influence in AI technology.
