Amazon introduced its revolutionary cashierless checkout technology, "Just Walk Out," in 2018, aiming to transform in-store shopping and dominate the U.S. grocery market. Initially deployed in Amazon Go stores, the technology allows customers to bypass checkout lines using overhead cameras and shelf sensors. Despite costly investments and ambitious expansion plans, scaling this technology proved challenging. Amazon recently scaled back its usage in its Fresh and Whole Foods stores, replacing it with Dash Carts that simplify the customer experience. Yet, the company's focus has shifted towards licensing Just Walk Out to third-party retailers, with over 200 stores adopting the technology.
This strategy aligns with Amazon's broader approach, akin to AWS, of leveraging its innovations for external clients. Although expanding the technology remains challenging, Amazon's efforts to achieve widespread adoption continue, with a focus on smaller store formats and improved system efficiency.
