YouTube has announced a new feature that allows parents to link their accounts to their teen's account, offering insights into the teen’s activity. This includes notifications about uploads, subscriptions, and comments—though not the content itself. Parents will also receive email alerts about new uploads, livestreams, and changes to video privacy settings.
This expansion builds on YouTube's 2021 parental controls, initially aimed at younger users. The new controls are part of ongoing efforts by tech companies to comply with regulations regarding minors' use of online services. Similar parental control features are already in place on platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.
Parents can access these new controls via YouTube's Family Center or through Google's Family Link app. The feature will roll out globally over the coming weeks. Additionally, YouTube has collaborated with Common Sense Networks and its Youth and Families Advisory Committee to provide resources for guiding teens on responsible content creation. The new controls aim to enhance safety and oversight for YouTube’s substantial minor user base.
