Yelp has filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that Google's dominance in search has allowed it to monopolize the local search and local search advertising markets. Yelp argues that Google harms consumers by promoting its own inferior local search product over competitors, thus stifling competition and increasing costs. The lawsuit seeks damages under the 1914 Clayton Act and demands that Google be prohibited from self-preferencing in local search.
Yelp’s general counsel, Aaron Schur, highlighted the anticompetitive conduct and pointed to Judge Amit Mehta's recent ruling against Google in a government antitrust case as a strong foundation for Yelp's claims. This new lawsuit adds to Google's existing antitrust issues following a recent loss in a DoJ case.
