OpenAI’s official press account on X was compromised by cryptocurrency scammers, mirroring previous hacks of company leadership. The compromised account posted about a fake OpenAI-branded blockchain token, “$OPENAI,” and linked to a phishing site designed to steal login credentials by encouraging users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets. Despite the scam's clear indicators, the post and link remained live, with comments disabled to obscure the hack.
This incident follows similar breaches of OpenAI leadership accounts, including CTO Mira Murati and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, who were targeted by scammers promoting the same fictional token. These scams are part of a broader trend affecting high-profile X accounts of tech companies and celebrities, contributing to significant financial losses from cryptocurrency scams. In 2023 alone, Americans lost $5.6 billion to such scams, a number expected to rise in 2024.
