Meta has confirmed that images and videos shared through its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses may be used to train its AI models. While the company states this is outlined in their privacy policy, concerns arise regarding user awareness, especially as Meta's AI offerings expand. Users uploading content captured by the smart glasses to Meta AI are contributing to a growing dataset used for AI development. This includes features such as live video analysis, which continuously feeds images to Meta’s AI systems.
Despite assurances that these interactions are covered by privacy agreements, the potential for misuse is highlighted by a recent $1.4 billion settlement in Texas over Meta's use of facial recognition technology. Meta stores voice transcriptions by default for AI training, but offers a voice recording opt-out when users first log in. These developments echo privacy issues first seen with Google Glass, underlining the need for transparent data usage policies as smart glasses gain traction.
