Threads, Meta's burgeoning social network designed to rival Twitter/X, has witnessed a significant growth, now boasting over 150 million monthly active users, a leap from 130 million reported in February. The announcement came from Mark Zuckerberg during Meta's Q1 2024 earnings call.
Efforts to enhance Threads' appeal include integrating with the decentralized protocol ActivityPub and opening up its API to developers in June, though it's still undecided whether it will support full-fledged third-party clients. Unlike its sister platforms, Threads missed out on Meta's AI chatbot launch last week, likely due to its no native DM functionality. Recent updates include a test feature for auto-archiving posts, enhancing user control over content visibility.
Despite being newer and not focused on amplifying news content, Threads is gaining traction fast, even outpacing X in daily active users in the U.S., a milestone that underscores its growing influence in the social media landscape.
