Ikea has introduced a peer-to-peer marketplace called Ikea Preowned, allowing customers to sell secondhand furniture directly to each other. Currently being tested in Madrid and Oslo, the platform aims for global rollout. This initiative is part of Ikea’s transformation towards online sales and sustainability, aligning with its goal to become "circular and climate positive" by 2030. The new platform leverages AI to enhance listings with promotional images and measurements, offering sellers the option of receiving cash or vouchers with a 15% bonus.
Listings are currently free, but Ikea may charge a nominal fee in the future. This move places Ikea in direct competition with platforms like eBay and Gumtree, where it already has substantial market share in secondhand sales.
