Google has introduced a new feature called Gmail Q&A, allowing Android users to chat directly with its AI assistant, Gemini, within the Gmail app. This feature, currently available to paying subscribers, enables users to ask Gemini to summarize emails or search for specific details within their inbox. For instance, users can command, “Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning,” or ask, “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?” While occasional inaccuracies may arise, Gemini still provides the source email for reference.
Traditionally, Gmail users relied on the search bar to locate information, but the new Gemini button will be placed beside the search bar, reflecting Google’s shift towards AI chat over traditional search. Currently, Gemini only has access to emails, but future updates may include connections to Google Drive files.
Initially launched in June for web users subscribing to Gemini or Google One AI Premium, the Gmail Q&A feature underscores Google’s efforts to push its AI services, which cost around $20 per month, to a broader audience. While free users won't have access to this feature soon, Google aims to integrate Gemini across its suite of products, including Google Docs and Google Calendar, to drive subscription growth.
