Google announced the rollout of AI Overviews for U.S. users of Google Search at its recent Google I/O event. AI Overviews utilize generative AI technology powered by Google Gemini to provide detailed answers to complex queries. The feature will only appear when it adds value beyond traditional search results, and its launch follows extensive testing since May 2023.
The company also revealed several other enhancements, including multistep reasoning, planning capabilities, AI-organized search results, and a new Google Lens feature allowing users to ask questions via video. Additionally, a new “Web” filter will let users limit search results to text-based links, echoing the simplicity of pre-2007 search experiences.
These updates aim to increase efficiency, user engagement, and satisfaction in navigating search queries.
