Apple has initiated layoffs impacting around 100 employees in its digital services division, particularly affecting the Apple Books team and its related store, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Launched in 2010 alongside the iPad by then-CEO Steve Jobs, Apple Books has not achieved the competitive success anticipated against rivals like Kindle. The layoffs suggest that Apple is shifting its investment focus away from Apple Books.
Additionally, employees working for Apple News and other services teams are also affected by these job cuts. Despite services constituting 28% of Apple's revenue in its last quarterly earnings, it is believed that a substantial portion of this income stems from in-app purchases and App Store subscriptions. The future of Apple's dominant position in mobile app distribution remains uncertain amid evolving regulatory changes.
